The History Behind XNITO’s E-Vehicle Helmets

Happy early New Year’s Eve from XNITO! The end of the year is the perfect time for reflection and continuing momentum into the new year! So, we are reflecting on our history and how we are where we are today: Although we began shipping out our first orders at the start of this year, our journey to make the perfect e-vehicle helmet began years prior.

The Beginning

Our founder and president, Ben Dai, purchased an e-vehicle for himself for easier riding amidst the steep hills of San Francisco. But, he discovered that normal bike helmets and available e-vehicle helmets didn’t protect him for riding his e-bike at speeds of 16-28 mph. This got him thinking.

He knew there were things he needed in the perfect e-vehicle helmet that didn’t yet exist all together: Helmets need to be well ventilated; lights and any other capabilities of the helmet would be good, but the helmet would still need to be lightweight; and, if the helmet was going to work for e-vehicle riding, it needed to provide protection at the higher speeds. And he had these questions: What are the current safety standards for safe e-vehicle helmet riding in the U.S.? How much ventilation is too much, and at what point does lightweight sacrifice durability? Do current helmets have lights on the front and back, and what is most optimal for safety on the road?

Ben set out to answer these questions. And soon, XNITO was born with the safety of e-vehicle riders being the highest priority. That’s why safety is our number one concern and mission.

Safety

Although current helmet safety standards in the U.S. by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission protects riders for speeds up to 15 mph, Class 3 electric vehicles travel at speeds up to 28 mph. E-vehicles are fairly new on the market, and as usage of e-vehicles increases, the need for safety and protection while riding e-vehicles has become an increasing need. We accepted this challenge and decided to make the perfect e-vehicle helmet to meet this challenge for e-vehicle riders around the world and in the U.S.

Meeting this challenge meant our helmets would meet the NTA 8776 standard, which is the level of safety compliance required in the Dutch Technical Agreement (NTA) 8776 for e-vehicle riding. The NTA 8776 standard is the most adequate safety standard for e-vehicle helmets in the world. It requires helmets to provide protection for speeds of up to 28 mph. In order to create a helmet that protects e-vehicle riders for these speeds, we needed thick EPS foam, more protective coverage at the temples, and more protective coverage at the back of the head.

The chart below shows various types of vehicles and the helmets adequate in safety protections for those vehicles.

XNITO Helmet Features

Creating the perfect e-vehicle helmet meant also minding the weight, look, and feel for the rider, the person wearing the helmet. Functionality, comfort, and style are important to riders and important to us, too!

  • Adequate Safety Protections, NTA 8776 Certification)

  • Rechargeable lights

  • Lights at front AND back
