What Class of eBike Do I Have—And What Helmet Do I Need?

eBikes are more than just regular bikes with motors—they’re faster, heavier, and require a different approach to safety. Whether you’re commuting, riding recreationally, or cruising trails, the class of eBike you ride should influence the helmet you wear.

Let’s break down the 3 main classes of eBikes and what kind of helmet gives you the protection you actually need.

⚙️ The 3 Classes of eBikes (Explained)

Class 1: Pedal Assist (Up to 20 MPH)

  • Motor kicks in only when you pedal

  • No throttle

  • Typically allowed on bike paths and trails

  • Great for casual riders and commuters

Helmet Recommendation:
At minimum, you need a CPSC-certified helmet (the standard in the U.S.). However, we strongly recommend a NTA 8776-certified helmet, like Xnito, even for Class 1 riders—because downhill speeds, traffic conditions, and heavier bike weight can all lead to higher-impact crashes. Better safe than sorry.

Class 2: Throttle + Pedal Assist (Up to 20 MPH)

  • Includes a throttle for motor-only movement

  • Also maxes out at 20 MPH

  • Allowed in most of the same places as Class 1, but some cities may have restrictions

Helmet Recommendation:
A CPSC helmet meets the legal minimum—but again, we suggest going with NTA 8776 for extra protection. Class 2 bikes often weigh more and accelerate quicker, which can change the dynamics of a crash. Xnito helmets are dual-certified and offer additional features like LED lights and extended coverage, which are especially helpful for riders on busy streets.

Class 3: Speed Pedelec (Up to 28 MPH)

  • Pedal assist only, but up to 28 MPH

  • Usually restricted from multi-use paths or trails

  • Designed for road use, fast commutes, and serious riders

Helmet Recommendation:
Here, NTA 8776 certification is essential. These helmets are tested for impacts at speeds up to 28 MPH and provide more coverage, higher-density foam, and better visibility features. A standard bike helmet won’t cut it.

Xnito helmets are fully CPSC + NTA 8776 dual-certified, giving you both legal and practical protection at high speeds.

🧠 Why We Recommend NTA 8776—Even for Lower Classes

The truth is, speed isn’t only about the motor. Downhill riding, momentum, and unexpected traffic situations can all turn a “Class 1” crash into a high-impact incident. That’s why we believe that every eBike rider—regardless of class—should consider an NTA 8776-certified helmet for maximum protection.

🛡️ Protect Your Ride (and Your Head)

Understanding your eBike class is step one. Choosing the right helmet for your speed, route, and risk is what keeps you riding longer and safer.
