Los Angeles-based electric bike manufacturer Hi-Power Cycles (HPC) has announced the launch of its new "defense division," HPC Defense. The division's debut product, an 80 mph (130 km/h) military electric bike, showcases the company's innovative approach to high-performance e-bikes for military applications.
In the US, civilian e-bikes are typically limited to speeds of 28 mph (45 km/h). However, HPC Defense's new Revolution W electric bike far exceeds this limit, designed for those with the necessary clearance to access its advanced capabilities.
The Revolution W is proudly made in the USA and boasts impressive power, earning its title as the “fastest factory military-grade e-bike in the world.” The bike's 10,500-watt motor propels it to speeds of up to 80 mph (130 km/h). Surprisingly, it is also designed to pedal efficiently at high speeds.
"Thanks to the German-made Schlumpf High-Speed Drive, you can achieve pedal speeds over 50 mph," explained HPC. "With a click of your heel, you can enable the 2.5x overdrive feature and maximize your efficiency at high speeds."
The Revolution W offers a throttle-only range of up to 100 miles (160 km), though this range is likely calculated at lower average speeds. As expected from a high-performance electric bike, it features long-range travel suspension with 9 inches of rear suspension travel and 8 inches in the front.
While the bike's cost remains undisclosed, the use of high-end components like an $1,800 to $2,000 fork suggests a price tag suitable for defense budgets.
HPC Defense also introduced Bryan Maizlish as its new Advisor & Interim President/CEO. Maizlish brings extensive experience from his leadership roles at Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman/TASC, Jacobs Engineering, and Human Security, a Goldman Sachs portfolio company.
Military e-bikes are increasingly common in modern defense strategies. The recent conflict in Ukraine has highlighted their utility, with Ukrainian forces using off-road electric bikes to transport anti-tank missile teams and insert sniper squads. Other militaries have long utilized electric bikes for patrol and tactical operations, appreciating their lightweight and maneuverability compared to electric or combustion-powered dirt bikes.
The pedals of these bikes provide a crucial backup propulsion method, ensuring mobility even when the battery is depleted.
